Alcohol Suspected Factor in Fatal Motorcycle Accident Sunday

COLUMBUS –  The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says a Bellwood man has died, after a single vehicle motorcycle accident on Sunday.

Sheriff Ed Wemhoff says on June 4th, the office repsonded at approximately 10:00 a.m. to a motorcycle accident on Highway 81, roughly a mile north of Highway 22.

The investigation indicated that 31-year-old, William Nickels, of Bellwood was driving a 1980 Kawasaki northbound on 81 when he lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle, says Wemhoff.

Columbus Rescue responded to the scene, and transported Nickels to the Columbus Community Hospital. Nickels was later transported by medical helicopter to the Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, says Wemhoff.

Wemhoff says on June 5th, Nickels died due to injuries suffered from the accident.

Wemhoff says Nickels was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and says alcohol is suspected to be a factor.
