Atkinson wastewater plant goes solar

ATKINSON – The northern Nebraska city of Atkinson celebrated the opening Thursday of a new array of solar panels.

These panels are providing 100 percent of the power generated by the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

The Atkinson partnered with South Dakota-based GenPro Energy Solutions about converting the plant…looking for ways to save money on the cost of keeping the plant running.

The 209-kilowatt array sits on land that used to be used for excess soil…trees and debris.

It’s a big move for a small town.

Solar power is a growing energy option in Nebraska. GenPro officials say they’ve installed ten different arrays in the state, including in towns like Lexington, Scottsbluff, and Schuyler.
