Beatrice Capitalizing on Youth Baseball, Softball

BEATRICE – Pay a visit to West Scott Street ball fields or Hannibal Park in Beatrice any night or weekend, and you’ll see a lot of activity.

In addition to summer baseball and softball leagues, late spring and summer also ushers in tournament season…and a big one was held at the West Scott Street complex this past weekend.

Public Properties Director for the City of Beatrice, Mark Pethoud says another tournament is scheduled for this coming weekend.

All that activity, Pethoud says, means a lot of business for the community and area as parents and their kids participate in the various tournaments.

The West Scott area has undergone a lot of field development in recent years and safety improvements, with Scott Street now closed off between Bluff and Center Streets.  Walkways, shelters and new playground equipment have been added.

The level of activity at the Scott Street complex has created a parking issue along Bluff Street, which Pethoud says may prompt the need for additional parking lot space in the future.  This year, two new ballfields have been added at Hannibal Park and Pethoud says there’s a lot of play going on their nearly every night, and on weekends.

Pethoud says the community is getting more notice when it comes time to host state or regional baseball and softball events.

Pethoud says the City of Beatrice has gotten a lot of help from Keep Beatrice Beautiful and United Parcel Service, providing grant support to help plant trees and provide some shade.   Nebraska Game and Parks grants have also assisted with ball field development.
