NORFOLK- The 11th annual Norfolk Rescue Mission Book Sale is going on now through Sunday at the Sunset Plaza during normal mall hours. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Rescue Mission, which helps feed and house the homeless in Norfolk.
This used book sale will help others in need while also providing affordable literature for readers of all ages. It also gives people the opportunity to clean out their bookshelves
Since this is a year-long project, individuals can drop off used books, DVD’S, and CDs anytime at the Rescue Mission located at 111th North 9th street.
This year hardcovers are 4 dollars and paperbacks are 2 dollars.
This is a huge volunteer-driven project. In fact, Pastor Will Perrigan says the youth from First Christian Church brought 500 boxes of books to the mall in under 2 hours.
The project has been a success from the start raising over $2,500 in the first year. Each year they continue to raise more money towards the Rescue Mission.
Last year they reached a record of over $12,000, and are hoping this year to reach $15,000.
“Do and give back” is Pastor Will Perrigan’s reasoning behind the event.
The week before the book sale is when they receive the most donations. People donated over 50 boxes of books in the past week, those books will be sorted through and stored in a warehouse for the twelfth annual book sale next year.
