MADISON- A close race for a new Norfolk City Council member has provoked a recount.
Unofficial election results showed that Jarad Dahlkoetter prevailed by one vote over Fred Wiebelhaus for a Ward 4 seat on the city council, being 580 votes to 579.
Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer said 74 provisional ballots were processed by the canvassing board, which is what changed the outcome of the projected winner. “I’m quite confident in the scanning equipment being 99% accurate and am anticipating that there won’t be any change in the outcome,” said Scheer.
However, since there is a margin of 1 percent or less between the candidates, state statute requires an automatic recount.
The recount will take place in the courthouse, Thursday at 2 PM. Ballots will be recounted using the same method that is used on election night, as required by state law.
Wiebelhaus and Dahlkoetter both said they will be present during the recount.
