WAYNE – An associate professor of geography at Wayne State College is scheduled to be honored by the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE).

In a release sent out Thursday afternoon, Dr. Lesli Rawlings will be recognized for the Higher Education Distinguished Teaching Award. The National Conference on Geography Education will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 29.

Dr. Rawlings Geography education history is a Ph.D. (2010) from UNL, a M.A. (2002) from UNO and a B.S. (2000) from UNO.

Her research interests include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to study local housing markets, public education issues, population decline in rural Nebraska and K-12 education. Dr. Rawlings’s teacher interests are GIS and computer mapping, urban geography, economic geography, world regional geography and geography of Europe.

Prior to teaching at WSC, Dr. Rawlings worked as a graduate teaching assistant for the introduction and advanced GIS courses at the University Nebraska-Lincoln. Also, she has experience as a real estate title specialist and a certified nursing assistant in the Omaha metropolitan area.

Dr. Rawlings serves as co-advisor of Gamma Theta Upsilon, an international geographical honor society at Wayne State College. As co-advisor, she introduced the WSC campus-wide geography bowl in honor of Geography Awareness Week in November. She has also served as one of the judges at the National Geographic State Bee in Omaha and has taught K-12 teachers about soil conservation by having them create GIS story maps.

Dr. Rawlings has been the recipient of several grants and was the recipient of the Award of Appreciation by Geographic Educators of Nebraska in December of 2014. She also received the Association of American Geographers Applied Geography Specialty Group’s Applied Exercise Award in 2012.
