WAYNE – As sub zero temperature covered most of the Midwest over the holidays, that didn’t stop from the first entry being created during Ponca State Park’s Snowman Building Contest.

To open the year, Don and Terri Hypse from Wayne took snow inside to let it warm up before packing it. They were joined by their granddaughters Delaney and Braelyn to create six mini snowmen with New Year top hats.

With snow in the forecast, Ponca State Park will continue to host the Snowman Building Contest through March 19. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third with the winner earning a free night’s stay in a Ponca State Park mini lodge. Winners will be announced on March 20.

The rules are simple, the snowmen can be any size, register your snowman at the Resource & Education Center and when finished let the staff know so that a photo can be taken.

You’ll need to supply your own accessories that stay with the snowmen, no swiping accessories from other snowmen, no damaging snowmen and no inappropriate creations, gestures, sayings or expressions may be used.

Contact the park at 402-755-2284 for more information or visit their Facebook page, Northeast Nebraska Parks. Photos will also be featured on Facebook and in the Resources & Education Center.
