How Marijuana Legislation Can Still Impact Nebraska Employers

COLUMBUS – With marijuana laws rapidly changing throughout the country, Nebraska employers are looking to stay up-to-date while developing workplace drug testing policies.

A presentation was held at Columbus Community Hospital on Wednesday on how recent marijuana legislation can impact drug testing in the workplace. Baird Holm Associate Leigh Campbell Joyce provided attendees with guidance on how to develop drug testing policies with regards to marijuana legislation around the country.

While Nebraska has not passed any legislation legalizing marijuana use, recreationally or medically, the fact that it is permitted in many other states can pose challenges for Nebraska employers. Joyce says that issues can arise with employers that have offices in different states, or who have employees that work remotely.

In those cases, employers must abide by the laws established in that certain state, which is why Joyce says it’s still important to stay current on marijuana legislation throughout the country. Joyce says that here in Nebraska, it’s still business as usual with regards to drug testing until the law changes, which she says seems more and more likely to happen in the future.
