Humphrey Residents Concerned over Intersection Proposal

HUMPHREY – A proposal aimed at making a dangerous intersection safer is provoking criticism from residents.

Community members listened to a proposal from the Nebraska Department of Transportation at a meeting Thursday night.

Engineers proposed a Restricted Crossing U-turn, also known as an RCUT. The purpose of the project is to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes and improve the mobility of traveling on highway 81 and 91 outside of Humphrey.

But its unfamiliar to locals.  Lonnie Weidner, the Mayor of Humphrey is in favor of making the intersection safer but is nervous about taking the experimental route.

Local truck drivers and farmers are even more nervous about the proposed change.

But the engineer says they’ve seen a great reduction in accidents in other states like Minnesota with the RCUT.

The public is able to weigh in on this proposed plan through December 14th.
