Judge Who Once Served as Attorney For Defendant, Encourages Change

BEATRICE – Convictions in two criminal cases have resulted in a three-year Gage County probation sentence, for a 26-year-old man.

Zachary Bond was convicted of possession of methamphetamine and THC, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bond’s attorney, Jeff Gaertig said Bond’s problems stem from a substance abuse problem.

District Judge Rick Schreiner was familiar with the defendant, having served as his defense lawyer in Johnson County several years ago, before becoming a prosecutor, then district judge.  The defense waived any conflict for the Wednesday sentencing.

Schreiner said he was willing to give Bond a chance on probation but said if he is truly sick and tired of his situation, he must make the decision to stay sober.

The probation sentence Bond received includes payment of court costs in both cases, a one-year license revocation and specialized substance abuse supervision.
