WAYNE – The Logan Creek chapter of Pheasants Forever is hosting their 18th annual Youth Mentor Hunt on Sunday, October 15th at Izaak Walton Lake.
Youth ages 11-15 who have already completed their Nebraska Game and Parks Hunter Safety course and received their hunter safety card are eligible to join the Pheasants Forever chapter volunteers for a day full of information, skills and, of course, hunting. Participants will learn about dog care and get archery, air rifle and trap shoot experience. After learning about various aspects of hunting, the youth and adults will put it all to work with a live pheasant hunt. Pheasants Forever member Tim Reinhardt said working with the kids helps them become comfortable and confident in their skills.
“The kids absolutely love it, it’s really neat to see they’re maybe a little shy at the beginning of the day, but by the time it’s all done it’s amazing,” Reinhardt said.
One of the key elements of the Youth Mentor Hunt is the adult volunteers that are helping to pass down their hunting skills to the next generation. The Logan Creek Chapter is open to new members and are still looking for volunteers for Sunday’s hunt. If volunteers can add to the experience, that’s all the better.
“Ideally, it’s a mentor per kid and if different folks have different skills, we’re always open to new suggestions,” Reinhardt said.
There is a limit of 16 youth, so those interested can pre-register by calling Reinhardt at (402) 518-0597. The 16 participants will receive a hunting vest, provided by Nebraska Game and Parks and Pheasants Forever, as well as a blaze orange hat. Youth hunters will also have an opportunity for a special drawing at the Pheasants Forever banquet in March.
“We do give away a lifetime hunting permit at our banquet and also one of the kids from the group this year will be registered to win a shotgun,” Reinhardt.
