The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District celebrated new beginnings Friday morning.
The NRD relocated to 1508 Square Turn Blvd., following a December 2017 vote to purchase the former Sterling Computer building. Prior to the move, the NRD had been located at the Lifelong Learning Center on the Northeast Community College campus since the center was constructed 20 years ago.
Mike Sousek, general manager for the NRD, said the taxpayers will benefit from this change. “Over the next 10 years the district will realize $500,000 in savings just in operation and maintenance costs by making this move.”
Sousek says they’ve outgrown the Lifelong Learning center and that overall the building is a lot more efficient. “The facility provides ample storage for work-spaces and board meetings as well as a building for vehicles and equipment on-site”.
Lower Elkhorn NRD has 24 full time employees, 15 are located at the new office.
The Lower Elkhorn NRD has programs to promote conservation efforts relating to natural resources such as flood control, farming and managing practices,
building damns, and water quality.
They are also part of the Riverfront Project in town.
