Man Sentenced for Stalking, Beating Ex-Wife

COLUMBUS – A Columbus man was sentenced to jail for stalking and beating his ex-wife, after stomping on her head and forcing her to be life-flighted to Omaha.

An affidavit by CPD Officer Scott Hanis says, 37-year-old Eric Schmidt was sentenced to a maximum of 4 years in jail, with credit for 30 days already served. Schmidt was found guilty of felony stalking and violating a protection order. The violation of a protection order charge was amended down from 1st degree felony assault.

Hanis says in the affidavit, that Schmidt punched his ex-wife in the mouth before stomping on her head and torso multiple times. The victim was later flown to UNMC in Omaha with a fractured skull and bleeding of her brain, says the affidavit.

The incident took place in August of 2016.

Schmidt is currently serving time for a  Colfax County child abuse conviction, where he was sentenced to a maximum of 60 months on two charges. The sentence in Platte County will run consecutive to his Colfax County Sentence.
