Nebraska Celebrating October, as Manufacturing Month

BEATRICE – October is Manufacturing Month, in Nebraska.   Governor Pete Ricketts and other state officials this week will be touring several manufacturers in Grand Island, Omaha, Sidney, Gering, Alliance, Holdrege and Minden.  The tours happen Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Governor Ricketts issued the proclamation for manufacturing month, at a Monday morning news conference.

Department of Economic Development Director, Courtney Dentlinger says one focus will be on emphasizing to young people that there are great opportunities in manufacturing.

Joseph Young with the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry notes that about 100,000 people are employed in manufacturing, in Nebraska.

Scott Volk is Vice President of MetalQuest Unlimited, in Hebron.  He’s also Chairman of the Nebraska Manufacturing Advisory Council.   Volk says manufacturing in Nebraska suffers from an image problem.  He says there are high-skill positions in manufacturing that provide a good career for workers.

Volk said it’s important to bring excitement about manufacturing to young people.  That includes establishing partnerships with cities and schools to promote technical training and provide information about the good jobs that are available.
