Norfolk Public Schools Announces Timeline for Preschool Expansion

NORFOLK — A new preschool facility is expected to be ready for Norfolk Public Schools in two years.

Superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools Dr. Jami Jo Thompson announced a timeline for the school district’s Little Panthers Preschool to move into their new 25th street facility at the School Board meeting on Monday night.

The school district closed on the purchase of the current Our Savior Lutheran Church building in mid-September and plans to begin classes in the facility in fall of 2019.

In the meantime, Thompson appointed a committee of administrators, teachers and community members to discuss a lot of topics.

“(They will look) at what the classroom design should be, what type of flooring do we want, where should the restrooms be, would we make the gym available for use by the community,” Thompson said.

The district committee will eventually interview potential architects and engineers with hopes of having a design by April of 2018.  Then they will take bids for a general contractor and begin renovation in September or sooner.  They expect the facility to be ready for move-in in July 2019.

Thompson outlined two options for future expansion of the space.  One plan could add up to nine preschool rooms and the other could add an elementary track to the building.

“If we see continued growth in the western side of town we could put an elementary track in that facility,” Thompson said.  “Or if we see the need remains in the Lincoln, Washington, Grant area, we could add an elementary track there.”
