Police: Norfolk Teen Attempts Assault By Beauty Product

NORFOLK — A Norfolk teen is in jail accused of trying to harm her roommate by pouring nail polish remover in her drink.

Norfolk Police Captain Don Miller says police were called to 201 North 12th Street around noon on Friday to investigate an attempted assault. He says officers found that 18-year-old Haley McElwain of Norfolk had poured nail polish remover into the drink of a roommate intending for her to consume it. Miller says nail polish remover contains acetone which is harmful if swallowed.

A witness was able to intervene and prevent the drink from being consumed. McElwain was arrested for attempted second degree assault and is being housed in the Madison County Jail.
