Phil McCarthy is exhausted, but feeling accomplished.
The Norfolk Native and ultramarathon runner completed his 49-day trek in New York.
McCarthy, a Norfolk Catholic graduate, who now lives in New York City made a stop back to Norfolk in the middle of his coast to coast run.
He had been running for days- literally. McCarthy ’s journey began August 21st at City Hall in San Francisco, and he finished October 9th at City Hall in New York City.
McCarthy tried to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ time for a transcontinental run of the United States. The record he was trying to beat was about 42 days and his journey lasted around 49 days and 8 hours.
He is awaiting confirmation but McCarthy believes he may hold the record for 3rd fastest transcontinental run by someone over 40 years old.
McCarthy, crew members, and a few friends celebrated his extraordinary accomplishment in Coney island with hot dogs and beer.
