Pickup, Train Collision East of Friend, Nebraska

BEATRICE – A collision between a train and a pickup near Friend, Wednesday, sent a Lincoln man to the hospital.

Saline County Sheriff’s investigators say the accident happened just before five p.m., at a crossing near Nebraska Highway 6, along County Road 800.

A pickup driven by 46-year-old James Costello of Lincoln was traveling south approaching the crossing.   As the pickup was crossing the tracks, it was struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train.

Costello was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend and later transferred to Bryan LGH West in Lincoln by medical helicopter.    Sheriff’s investigators said Costello’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening.  The train crossing is marked by crossbucks and a yield sign.
