Results For City Of Wayne Comprehensive Development Survey To Be Shared Thursday Evening

WAYNE – Mark the evening of Thursday, June 15 on your calendar to hear an update of results from the Comprehensive Development Survey for the City of Wayne.

The survey was introduced to the community in May and the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District was pushing to get as much results by the end of May.

The City of Wayne applied for a Comprehensive Development Grant and are currently in phase I of the planning study. Wayne has the potential of being awarded over $600,000 during the implementation phase (phase II). Potential eligible activities that can be funded are housing rehab, homebuyers assistance program, storm sewer, flood control, as well as drainage, sidewalk and street improvements, water distribution and sanitary sewer system redevelopment projects.

On Thursday at two different times the updated survey results will be announced from the north meeting room in the City Auditorium at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Both Executive Director for the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District (NENEDD), Tom Higginbotham and Community Planner, Jan Merrill will be in attendance

The NENEDD covers 17-counties in northeast Nebraska and there are close to 100 communities in those counties.

Wayne is one of Merrill’s communities and she said the Department of Economic Development designated a certain area in the City of Wayne that is low, to moderate income.

“We’re going to study that area and determine what are the needs of that area,” said Merrill. “And what the phase II grant could potentially do to cover those issues.”

Nearly three-quarters of Wayne is included in this survey. Majority of the southeast and northwest portion of town and some in the southwest section in the City of Wayne.

The City of Wayne has received a similar grant in the past and the meeting will have history of the grant before updated results are announced. Both Merrill and Higginbotham will be looking for community input.

“So that the community has the opportunity to help determine what projects the implementation grant will be used for,” Merrill added. “We’ve used the tag line, “It’s Your Community, It’s Your Decision.”

The survey is still open and if you haven’t filled it out yet there is an English and Spanish version online.

The Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District will be finishing up the pre-development study in August of 2017.  The group will attend one of the August City Council meetings where they will present their information. A public hearing would then be held in one of the following meetings for the second phase.
