Salmonella Outbreak in West Point Reaches 22 Confirmed Cases

FREMONT – Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services are investigating an outbreak of salmonella in West Point.

They were alerted to the outbreak on Monday, and to date, there have been 22 confirmed cases and six probable cases. ELVPHD and DHHS are working to identify the source of the outbreak, but no cause has yet been determined. According to Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department’s Health Director, Gina Uhing, dining at Red Door Coffee was a common factor in all the confirmed cases. She says salmonella is often spread via poultry and eggs.

“Contamination can happen any time throughout the life of an egg,” said Uhing. “So from the point on the farm, in-transit, to the distribution site, in the home, in restaurants, there’s a lot of different possibilities. That’s the reason this is all being looked at, because we’re still not certain where along the way the illness came into play.”

Red Door Coffee owners and staff have been cooperating with ELVPHD and DHHS in the investigation, and all parties are focused on resolving the issue. Uhing says they have created a brief survey for diners of the Red Door Coffee to help in the process. She says there are a few common symptoms in the confirmed cases of salmonella.

“The main symptoms that have been reported to us, diarrhea is the main one. Severe abdominal stomach cramps, and sometimes fever, sometimes vomiting and nauseousness,” said Uhing. “So those are what we would want people to be looking for. And if they should experience the symptoms, we would want them to consult with their healthcare provider for recommendation in terms of testing and treatment.”

Anyone who ate at Red Door Coffee between July 14th and July 29th is asked to complete their brief survey to help ELVPHD and DHHS. The survey may be found by visiting Uhing stated they will continue to monitor the situation over the weekend and will provide an update sometime on Monday.
