BEATRICE – Gage County Sheriff’s investigators say they have cleared several burglary and theft cases in the southeast part of the county with an arrest, made Thursday night.
Law officers served a search warrant on a property about two miles north of Barneston, arresting 46-year-old Shawn Huntington.
Deputies and a Nebraska State Patrol officer served the warrant at around seven p.m. Thursday and found Huntington in a small shed north of the main residence at the location. When told to come out of the shed, Huntington did not comply initially, then allegedly fled on foot, running between buildings and past several piles of junk and equipment. He was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.
Authorities say the suspect had been using the shed as a living quarters and workshop. Following the arrest, law officers located several items believed to have been stolen, including tools, tool accessories and a Polaris all-terrain vehicle.
During the search, authorities also found a homemade explosive device located in a vehicle used by Huntington. A Nebraska State Patrol bomb squad was summoned to handle the device.
Gage County law officers say the investigation is continuing. The person who owns the property cooperated with deputies and investigators while the search was conducted.
Huntington is being held in the Gage County Jail, on suspicion of possession of stolen property, possession of a destructive device, possession of a controlled substance and obstructing an officer.
He is scheduled to appear Monday, in Gage County Court.
