O’NEILL, NE — Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is carving out its own niche among the busiest shopping week of the year.
Chambers of Commerce and small businesses across Nebraska are sponsoring campaigns to encourage consumers to patronize local, brick and mortar shops.
Delray Kumm owns of Shamrock Nursery in O’Neill and says small businesses are the ones who keep communities strong.
“All the profits of a small business usually are returned to the community while the large box stores go generally elsewhere,” Kumm said.
Kearney residents could participate in a selfie contest at local businesses with a chance to win a shopping spree. North Platte residents could embark on a passport challenge at area shops. Other Chambers of Commerce chose to promote the day on social media.
Shamrock Nursery took the day, and the weekend, to another level by hosting its annual Poinsettiafest.
“We really promote all of our poinsettias that we grow right here in O’Neill,” Kumm said. “We try to bring in lots of people from the surrounding communities as well to see our poinsettias.”
Small Business Saturday started as an initiative of American Express in 2010 and has since grown popular nationally.
