Some Pierce residents were temporarily placed on alert Thursday afternoon.
Crews demolishing the former Farm and Garden building on the northeast corner of Main and Mill streets struck a gas service line just after noon. The crew had been told gas was shut off at the construction site but it was not.
Emergency response personnel blocked off three blocks of Main street while waiting for Black Hills Energy to arrive to shut off the gas. Nearby residents were told to stay indoors and Zion Lutheran School students were told to stay in classrooms.
There were no injuries and no damage to property.
