BEATRICE – A nine-year-old girl has died from injuries in a three-vehicle collision about five miles north of Manhattan, Kansas in Riley County. The accident happened at the east junction of Highways 24 and 77.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that Isabella Plemons, of Riley, Kansas, was a passenger in a Nissan Pathfinder driven by 25-year-old Lauren VanMeter, of Manhattan. The S-U-V was stopped on U.S. Highway 24 facing east, when the driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic.
The K-H-P says the Pathfinder was struck by a southbound vehicle on U.S. Highway 77 driven by 59-year-old Darrell Thompson, of Wamego, Kansas. His vehicle then crossed the centerline, colliding with a northbound GMC pickup driven by 64-year-old Mason Miller, of Manhattan.
Isabella Plemons was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where she died. VanMeter was taken to Mercy Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of injuries. Thompson and Miller were not injured.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says it’s not known whether the driver of the Pathfinder and the fatality victim were using safety restraints. The drivers of the vehicles traveling U.S. 77 were wearing seat belts.
The collision happened at around 5:25 p.m., Tuesday.
