Bennington Sweeps Post 43 Baseball Saturday

WAYNE – Following a canceled game on Friday night with Ponca due to weather, the Wayne Post 43 American Legion baseball teams were back in action Saturday afternoon.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, Post 43 played host to Bennington.

During the Juniors contest, Bennington brought in a pair of runs in the first inning to lead 2-0. Bennington then scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 6-0. Wayne Post 43 then countered with a six-run fifth inning only to be outdone with a four-run sixth and one-run seventh by Bennington to win 12-6. Wayne Post 43 is now 10-9 on the season.

Trevor DeBoer produced a single and double to lead Wayne at the plate. Jacob Kneifl and Reid Korth also doubled and each drove in a run.

DeBoer suffered the loss in five and two-thirds allowing 11 runs (nine earned) off of 16 hits. Josh Lutt pitched the final inning and a third allowing an earned run off of two hits while walking one batter.

Moving into the Seniors game, Bennington led early with two runs in the first inning before Wayne Post 43 won the second inning 2-1. Five straight innings of scoreless baseball would end the game with Bennington holding off Wayne 3-2. Wayne Post 43 is now 8-5 overall.

Adam Bentjen recorded a double and drove in a run while Brennan O’Reilly also doubled for Wayne Post 43 at the plate.

Bentjen suffered the complete game loss in seven innings allowing three earned runs off of eight hits while striking out one batter and walking another four.

The Ponca game from this past Friday, June 16, which was cancelled due to weather will not be made up. Both the Wayne Post 43 Juniors and Seniors will be in action this evening with Arlington coming to Hank Overin Field. Juniors will start at 5:45 p.m. with Seniors to follow at 8 p.m.
