Blue Devil Softball Able To Knock Off #1 Seed, Run Out Of Gas In Following Elimination Game

HASTINGS – The Wayne High Blue Devils were put to the test early in the Class B NSAA State Softball Championships with #1 Elkhorn South and battled #6 Seward in another elimination game Thursday afternoon.

In the loser’s bracket game held at the Smith Softball Complex, both the Storm and Blue Devils had suffered a first round defeat to a lower seed. The two teams met earlier this year during the Lincoln Public Schools Invite on August 26, which Elkhorn South won 10-3.

In the opening contest, Wayne went 10 innings toe for toe with the Storm before winning the game 4-3. Following a brief break in between games Seward took advantage of a five-run inning to eliminate WHS 8-0 in six innings.

Wayne High ends their tournament run, 1-2 and finished the 2017 season with a 29-5 record.

From the win over #1 Elkhorn South, the Storm brought in a run in the first before Wayne answered in the home half with three runs. Elkhorn South tallied a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings. Both teams battled through three extra-inning before Wayne drove in the winning run during the 10th.

Sophomore Tori Kniesche paced Wayne High at the plate with a pair of singles and drove in two runs. Senior Kennedy Maly added two singles and accounted for bringing in the winning run of junior Josie Thompson. Senior Jamie Gamble and junior Abi Ankeny each doubled while junior Maysn Dorey, senior Jenna Trenhaile and junior Sidney Biggerstaff all singled.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game win in 10 innings allowing three runs (two earned) off of five hits while striking out 18 batters, walking one and hitting another. She threw a total of 146 pitches, 98 strikes.

During the second elimination game, #6 Seward jumped out early with two-runs in the third inning before scoring five in the fourth all with two outs. Seward won the game with a run in the sixth, 8-0.

Offensively for Wayne High, Dorey recorded two singles to pace Wayne at the plate. Junior Annie Kniesche and Trenhaile each singled.

Tori Kniesche suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing eight runs (one earned) off of five hits while striking out nine batters and walking another two. She threw 120 pitches, 76 strikes.
