After April Fools’ joke goes viral, Omaha Storm Chasers will actually be the Omaha Potholes for one game

The people asked. The Omaha Storm Chasers delivered.

What began as an April Fools’ Day joke has become reality after many fans embraced the idea. The Omaha Storm Chasers will play a game as the Omaha Potholes.

“Omaha Potholes Night” is set for April 24. A limited run of Potholes team gear is available right now on the team’s website.

“I didn’t in my wildest imagination think (the joke) would take on a national level (of attention),” said president and general manager Martie Cordaro. “Locally I knew it was something that would draw attention. Just this morning, driving in on three different roads I thought I was running an obstacle course.”

Twenty percent of proceeds from the gear will be donated through Chasers Charities. But instead of using Pothole proceeds to fill potholes, the team will donate the money to repair little league baseball and softball fields damaged in this year’s flood.

The Storm Chasers will announce more details about the night’s festivities in the near future.

Omaha is scheduled to host Memphis for that game, which also doubles as “Wiener Wednesday” with $0.25 hot dogs and “Bark in the Park” which admits dogs for free in sections 100 and 101 and the right field side of the berm.

The Omaha Potholes name stemmed from what was originally an April Fools’ Day prank by the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Chasers invited national sports business reporter Darren Rovell, who appeared to fall for the joke and shared it as if it was a real promotion, to throw out the first pitch at April 24’s game.

Cordaro cited the success of the team’s other “what-if” nights as an indicator that people will want to buy Omaha Potholes gear. The team has transformed into the Omahogs, the Force, the Commanders, the Runzas and the Sizzle for one-off events.

“This is a night to come out to the ballpark on a value night and have some tongue-in-cheek fun,” he said. “We’ll see if they put their money where their mouth is.”
