Blue Devil Softball Crowned Invitational Champions For Second Time This Season

OMAHA – The Wayne High softball team took part in the Omaha Mercy Softball Invitational over the weekend.

WHS earned the #2 seed with games held at the Westgate Softball Complex Saturday.

The Blue Devils opened with a 5-2 win over #7 Mercy, while defeating #3 David City/East Butler 9-0 and were crowned champions with a 2-0 win over #4 Plattsmouth. WHS is now 14-2 on the season and have won seven straight games.

In the win over the host team, Mercy, Wayne High jumped out front with a three-run opening inning. The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth as each team scored a run in the fifth and Mercy scored one final run in the sixth.

Jamie Gamble recorded a double, triple and two RBI to pace Wayne at the plate. Kennedy Maly added a double and RBI while Maysn Dorey and Jenna Trenhaile also doubled. Trenhaile tacked on a single.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game win in six innings allowing two runs (one earned) off of four hits while striking out 15 batters and walking another five.

From the second win over David City/East Butler, the Blue Devils brought in five-runs during the second inning. WHS then added two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to win 9-0.

Abby Ankeny paced the Blue Devils at the plate with a single, double and a five RBI performance. Tori Kniesche doubled during one of her two hits while Sidney Biggerstaff doubled. Jamie Gamble added a single and three RBI while Dorey singled and drove in a run.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game, no-hitter shutout win in five innings. She struck out 13 batters and walked another five.

During the championship win over Plattsmouth, both teams were held scoreless in four innings. Then, in the fifth Wayne High brought in a run and again in the sixth to win 2-0.

Tori Kniesche doubled during one of her two hits while adding a RBI. Gamble added a double while Kennedy Maly, Annie Kniesche and Trenhaile each singled.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game, shutout win in seven innings allowing one hit while striking out 18 batters and walking another two batters.

Wayne High softball is next in action during a road triangular in West Point. WHS will face West Point-Beemer and Schuyler on Monday, September 11.
