PENDER/WISNER – The Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic came to a close over the weekend as teams were broken into three brackets in two locations.
From Wisner, the Gold and Silver Tournaments were held while the Bronze Tournament was played in Pender.
In the Gold Division, Wayne High suffered losses to Wisner-Pilger (25-13, 25-21), Fremont Archbishop Bergan (25-22, 23-25, 25-18) and North Bend Central (25-23, 23-25, 25-18) to take fourth place in the Gold Division.
In the loss to Wisner-Pilger, freshman Lauren Pick was the team leader in kills with seven. Sophomore Emily Armstrong recorded 10 blocks (nine solo), senior Kylie Hammer added 12 digs while sophomore Allyson Avery tacked on 12 set assists.
During the loss to Bergan, both Hammer and Armstrong recorded seven kills while junior Ahston Boyer added another five. Hammer also paced the team in digs with 20 as sophomore Korrina Niemann followed with 17. Avery tacked on 25 set assists.
From the final loss to North Bend Central, it was Pick again leading the team with 10 kills followed by senior Shania Anderson with another six. Armstrong led the team in digs with 12 as Avery added 16 set assists.
North Bend Central placed first with three set wins over both Wayne and Bergan while sweeping Wisner-Pilger. Archbishop Bergan also defeated Wisner-Pilger as the Gators only defeated Wayne.
From the Silver Bracket, Wakefield suffered losses to Tekamah-Herman (23-25, 25-14, 25-19), Guardian Angels Central Catholic (25-14, 25-20) and Lutheran High Northeast (26-24, 25-23).
Tekamah-Herman also defeated LHNE, LHNE also won over GACC and no score was reported from the GACC/T-H game.
Wayne High is now 2-4 on the season and will next compete in the North Bend Tournament on Saturday, September 9. Wakefield opens their season at 1-3 and will host a tournament this weekend.
