WINSIDE – 10 northeast Nebraska wrestling teams and one Millard school traveled to Winside over the weekend.
The 49th Winside Invite took place Saturday from Winside High School.
Wayne High, with the second most wrestlers dressed (10) won the invitational with 128.5 points, ahead of Hartington Cedar Catholic who took second (113) and Clearwater/Orchard who had the most wrestlers (14) placed third with 97 points.
The host, Winside finished fourth (86), followed by Guardian Angles Central Catholic (T-fifth – 69.5), Millard North JV (T-fifth – 69.5), Randolph (seventh – 61), Battle Creek JV (T-eighth – 54), St. Mary’s (T-eighth – 54), Niobrara-Verdigre (10th – 27), Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (11th – 24) and Osmond (12th – 22).
For Wayne High, Reece Jaqua (120), Cameron Muhs (126), Juan Vergara (132) and Hunter Jorgensen (220) all earned first place finishes while Brandon Wacker (132), Victor Kniesche (138) and Berto Vergara (160) all went runner-up. Isaac Cliff (145) came away in third while both Lance Muhs (113) and Mike Leatherdale (220) took fourth.
Winside was led by Koby Ellis (113) with the lone first place result while Carter Jensen (120) and Michael Jensen (182) each finished runner-up and it was Matthew Frederick (126) and Johnathan Escalante (220) both taking third. Other Wildcat results found Alex Carlson (132) place fifth and Dominic Reed (132) finish sixth.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s Ethan Williams (285) finished second while Michael Kurtzhals (160) finished sixth.
The Wayne High Blue Devil wrestlers will next take part in a road dual at Battle Creek on Thursday, January 11 starting at 7 p.m. WHS will also travel to Schuyler for an invitational starting at 9 a.m. this Saturday.
