COLUMBUS – Following a road triangular to open the season last week, the Wayne High Blue Devil wrestling team joined nine other schools for their first invitational of the year.
From Lakeview High School in Columbus, Wayne High took part in the Columbus Lakeview Invite and came out with a third-place finish scoring 119 points.
Host, Columbus Lakeview took first with 228, followed by North Bend Central in second with 154, Columbus Scotus placed fourth (104) and Gibbon rounded out the top five teams (96). Twin River (sixth – 73), East Butler (seventh – 71.5), Cross County/Osceola (eighth – 67), Fullerton (ninth – 38) and Shelby Rising City (10th – 25) were the remaining five teams.
Berto Vergara (170) and Mike Leatherdale (220) each came away with second place finishes as Reece Jaqua-Wilson (120), Juan Vergara (126), Casey Koenig (182) and Daniel Maxson (195) all took third, Cameron Muhs (126) placed fourth and Victor Kniesche (138) finished fifth.
Last Thursday from Clearwater, Wayne High won both duals by defeating Wisner-Pilger (51-12) and Clearwater-Orchard (48-30).
The Wayne High Blue Devil wrestling team is back in action on Thursday, December 7 at Norfolk Catholic for a dual starting at 7 p.m.
