NEWMAN – After playing road games for girls and boys only, the Wayne High basketball teams came together and traveled to Newman to battle Boone Central/Newman Grove Saturday.
During the girls contest, Wayne High jumped out front with a 21-13 first quarter while winning the second quarter, 16-11. At the halftime mark, WHS led 37-24. The Blue Devils added a 16-13 third quarter and won the fourth, 9-2. Final found Wayne High winning 62-39 to improve to 10-4 on the season as the Cardinals fell to 2-9.
Kylie Hammer recorded a team-high 13 points for Wayne High, Frankie Klausen followed with 11 points and Gabi Meyer tacked on 10 points off the bench. Jenna Trenhaile brought down a team-high 14 rebounds as Hammer grabbed seven boards.
From the boys game, Boone Central/Newman Grove took the opening quarter, 15-10 as Wayne High bounced back in the second with a 9-6 quarter. The Cardinals held a 21-19 lead at the break and saw that lead grow following a 19-16 third quarter. Wayne trailed at most by 15 with about five minutes left in the game and was able to come back to win 56-55. WHS improves to 6-6 overall while Boone Central/Newman Grove fell to 7-4.
Jack Evetovich went off for 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds to pace WHS on the court. Shea Sweetland followed with 16 points as Mason Lee added another 13 points and six boards.
Wayne High will next host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Tuesday, January 9.
