Boone Central/Newman Grove Dominates Defending C1 Champ

O’NEILL – The high school football axis may have shifted a bit on Friday.

Boone Central/Newman Grove shocked the defending Class C1 state champs in O’Neill on Friday, handing the Eagles their first loss since 2015, 42-0.

O’Neill looked to be comfortable offensively early on, as quarterback Alex Thramer deftly worked the Eagles into BC/NG territory.

But the Cardinals’ Garrett Cornwell intercepted a Thramer pass, ending the drive.

Instead, it would be Boone Central/Newman Grove that would strike first, on what initially appeared to be a broken play. The Cardinals ran a jet sweep reverse, but Cardinal wideout Ethan Dozler was hit as he tried to deliver the ball back to quarterback Dylan Gentrup. Gentrup was able to gather the ball and deliver a perfect strike to Cody Nelson from 46 yards out.

From there, the Cardinals offensive front dominated at the point of attack, manhandling an Eagle line that had replaced all of its starters from last year.

The work the line did was augmented by the skills of running back Levi Krueger, who carried the ball 23 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The 205-pound senior credited his offensive line for the dominant performance.

“My hat’s off to everyone on the front line,” Krueger said. “They played great. There was no lack of focus tonight. That helps in a big win.”

The Cardinals would add two more scores late, a five-yard run by Dylan Gentrup and a 51-yard run by reserve running back Ty Nissen, handing O’NNeill their most lopsided defeat since losing to Columbus Scotus 62-14 in the opening round of the 2015 Class C1 playoffs.

The game was a far cry from last year’s 38-0 O’Neill win. The Cardinals outgained the Eagles 379 yards to 133, and forced three turnovers including two interceptions of Alex Thramer, who went 13 games without an interception all last year.

Boone Central/Newman Grove (2-1) will be tested next week as they host unbeaten Norfolk Catholic. O’Neill (2-1) willtry to bounce back on the road against Columbus Lakeview.
