LYONS, NE — The BRLD Wolverines scored eight touchdowns and defeated the Freeman Falcons 56-39 in the first round of the Class C-2 Playoffs on Friday night.
Freeman (7-3) came in allowing just 13 points per game and had surrendered just 27 points over their last four games. The Falcons couldn’t slow down the Wolverines (8-2), though.
Freeman jumped in front first on a one-yard carry from Gabe Eisenbarth.
Then, BRLD rattled off two straight touchdowns. The first was a 55-yard bomb from Will Gatzemeyer to Dylan Beutler. Later in the first quarter, Gatzemeyer ran it in himself for a five-yard score.
The Falcons responded by forcing a fumble and setting up a short field. Quarterback Jackson Furstenau found Eisenbarth for a 15-yard touchdown and the Falcons used a fake PAT to convert a two-point conversion and nab a 15-14 advantage.
The Wolverines took over in the second quarter. Gatzemeyer started to connect with wide receiver Lucas Vogt. Vogt scored three touchdowns in the quarter: a 33-yard catch, a seven-yard run and a 44-yard catch. It was 34-15 at halftime.
BRLD leaned on running back Jackson Beaudette in the second half. He carried the ball 19 times for 137 yards. He tallied a nine-yard touchdown for the lone score of the third quarter. Then, Vogt busted through tackles for a 35-yard touchdown catch to make it 48-15.
The Falcons didn’t go quietly, though. Freeman scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to cut their deficit to just 15 points. A safety in the final minutes sealed the win for BRLD.
