Indians Use Second Half To Their Advantage, Sweep Wakefield At Home

PONCA – It was a Lewis & Clark Conference showdown between a pair of northeast Nebraska high schools when Wakefield visited Ponca Tuesday evening.

From the girls contest, Wakefield kept the game close only trailing 13-8 in the opening quarter. After Wakefield tied the game at 15 all, that’s when Ponca turned on the scoring gear and finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 24-15 at half. The second half was the same for the Indians, outscoring Wakefield 21-3 to win 45-18. Ponca is now 9-5 overall while Wakefield falls to 4-10.

Neither team had a player in double figure scoring, but Ponca had eight players score at least two points. Junior Sydni Hughes, junior Taylor Lamprecht and sophomore Bree Gill each scored a team-high eight points.

Senior Sophie Kramper: six

Sophomore Kaci Day: five

Senior Abby Schweers/senior Alison Brennan: four each

Junior Kortney Kethkenher: two

Senior Kenna Mackling paced Wakefield in scoring with six points, followed by four each from juniors Jamie Dolph and Jessica Borg. Freshman Maddie Mogus and senior Andrea Lopez each tallied two points for the Trojans.

During the boys game, Ponca closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 18-11. The Indians matched their opening quarter score while Wakefield was only able to add eight points in the second. Score at the half found Ponca leading 36-19. Ponca then pulled away in the second half with a 17-6 third and 16-11 fourth quarters. Final found Ponca winning their 23rd straight game to now sit 13-0 on the year while Wakefield had their three-game winning streak snapped (8-5).

Four Ponca players scored double figures with seniors Connor Day and Logan Kingsbury along with sophomore Brandon Kneifl each recording 11 points. Senior Max Masin tallied 10 points, followed by five each from sophomore Paul Masin and junior Evan Anderson.

Wakefield was led in scoring by senior Parker Lehmkuhl with 12 first half points, sophomore Blake Heimann added nine second half points and junior Solomon Peitz recorded seven points. Freshman Justin Erb tallied four points, junior Israel Gardea (three) and two points each from freshman Blake Brown and junior Dylon Harder.

Ponca will host Elk Point-Jefferson, SD while Wakefield will visit Winside both on Friday, January 12.
