Jackson Signs With Bearcat Baseball Team

WAYNE – After two female athletes signed their national letters of intent to attend Wayne State College, a male athlete will become a student-athlete out of state.

Senior Zane Jackson of Wayne High School signed a national letter of intent to join the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team for the 2018-19 school year. He plans to catch with the Bearcats.

Jackson was a part of the Blue Devil football team and competes in Wayne High spring ball and Summer American Legion Baseball.

He talks about why Northwest.

“I just really like their campus,” said Jackson. “I went down there, I liked their program, I like what they were about. I just have always been a fan of Maryville, Missouri.”

Jackson was injured during the 2017 spring season with Wayne High. But Zane did lead the Wayne Post 43 Senior American Legion baseball team in RBI’s (22) and doubles (11) while being tied for second in total hits (26) and third in runs scored (18).

Jackson fractured the end of his elbow, a screw was put in and then taken out. He added came a long ways since then because last spring he didn’t think he could play baseball again.

“At first, I didn’t know what to think,” Jackson added. “But, now that it’s in the past I really don’t have to think about that. I’m just here and I’m going to be in Maryville next fall doing what I love.”

Defensively, Jackson posted a .979 field percentage with only two errors on 86 putouts and turned four double plays this past summer. Jackson also appeared in four games on the mound, working four and a third innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) off of three hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

Like all baseball players, Jackson mentioned he needs to work on hitting, his pop time and just fundamentals.

Northwest Missouri State finished 32-20 last year, placing seventh in the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association with a 19-16 league mark.

Zane Jackson is planning on studying Business Management.
