Nine Seniors Make Up Winside Boys Roster, Looking To Improve On Last Year’s Nine-Win Season

WINSIDE – With an experienced group of seniors back for the Winside boys basketball team, the Wildcats were in the gym Monday evening preparing to open their 2017-18 season.

After getting to work with the full court for the first 30 minutes, the boys then split half the gym with the girls for over an hour.

Tom Meyer enters his fourth year as the head coach for the Wildcats. There are 15 guys currently on the Wildcat roster, but an injury and ineligible will hold back the full roster until after Christmas break. Coach Meyer said the guys have earned another year of experience.

“You know I think they’ve matured a lot,” said Meyer. “I just think that they’ve played enough together that I’m hoping we can really make something happen.”

Winside also competed with Wisner-Pilger last Monday.

The Wildcats posted nine wins during the 2016-17 season (9-12). That was as many wins as they won the previous six seasons (2010-2015/16). The Wildcats began their season 4-1 before going 1-1 in the Randolph Holiday Tournament. Winside did suffer a pair of three-game losing streaks in January and carrying over to February.

Senior (#20) post Dylan Brogren and senior (#14) point guard/guard Brandon Watters are two of those guys who will add more experience to the program.

Brogren added what the team has been up to the past two weeks as Watters mentioned some team goals.

“We’ve been working a lot on trying to keep conditioned and a lot on ball movement,” Brogren added. “Trying to get open spots along the court.”

“Team goal is one game at a time, don’t overlook anybody,” Watters mentioned. “Our main goal is to try and get down to state, but one game at a time.”

The Winside boys basketball team will open with a pair of road contests. Winside will visit Plainview on Thursday, November 30 and Wynot on Friday, December 1. The first home Wildcat game will be on Thursday, December 7 with Clarkson/Leigh coming to town.
