Nine Wildcat Wrestlers Compete In Sioux City Open As Martinez Goes 2-2 To Lead The Way, Updated NCWA Rankings Released

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Wayne State College club wrestlers had a tough go after coming off a third-place finish in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Duals in late January.

WSC joined several top tier programs during the Sioux City Open in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday, February 3. Teams from Iowa State, Grand View, Dickinson State, Minnesota West, Graceland University, Nebraska-Kearney, Northern State and more along with unattached athletes form Nebraska and Augustana were in attendance

The Wildcat wrestlers will next travel to Winona, Minnesota for the Winona Invite on Saturday, February 10.

Also, the monthly NCWA rankings were released on Tuesday, February 6. Wildcat freshman Alejandro Martinez (125) moved up three positions to #14 (14-4 overall record/10-1 NCWA record) as sophomore Hunter Weiss (149) dropped two spots to #18 (7-10 overall /4-7 NCWA). Wayne State College as a team sits 23rd amongst the top 26, Division I teams with six overall points (four national/regional dual points).

Individual results below:

Alejandro Martinez wrestled in the 133-weight class and won by major decision over Joseph Marquez (Midland) then suffered a technical fall loss (16-0) to Gresh Jones of Dickinson State. Martinez finished off the day by going 2-2 picking up another win by fall (2:38) over Hser Moo Pwae (Minnesota West) then lost by fall (5:28) to Joel Timmons (Grand View).

Both Levi Honeywell and Matthew Reeves (141) were eliminated in the opening round. Honeywell lost by fall (4:21) to Trey Fischbach (Unattached) as Reeves lost by fall (1:22) to Joel Becerra of Iowa Western Community College.

Both Ethan Fitzler and Hunter Weiss (149) suffered first round defeats. Fitzler lost by decision (6-4) to Brendan Crews (Morningside) as Weiss lost by SV-1 (4-2) to Matt Stines (Morningside).

Justin Boone (157) lost by fall (:47) to Dakota Drenth (Morningside).

Chris Gallegos (165) earned a bye in the opening round, but then lost by fall (:37) to Dylan Schuck (Unattached – Augustana).

Gerald Kenkel (174) lost by fall (5:11) to Dylan Costello (Unattached) then was eliminated with another loss by fall (1:08) by Tyler Jorgensen (Concordia-NE).

Spencer Trout (184) lost by decision (10-4) to Braiden Nelson (Northern State) and after earning a bye in the loser’s bracket, suffered another loss by decision (8-3) to Ethan Leighton (Grand View).
