Norfolk Sweeps Fremont

GIRLS: Norfolk (8-9) 42, Fremont (4-13) 41

The Norfolk girls survived a hard-fought, back-and-forth affair to edge Fremont on the road. The Panthers opened an 11-3 lead in the 1st quarter, only to see the Tigers take control from there, holding a 21-18 halftime lead. Fremont kept the pressure on in the 3rd, building a 30-24 lead, before the Panthers answered with a 9-0 run to give them a lead they would not relinquish. Jenna Jochum led the Panthers with 15 points, and hit two key free throws late that gave Norfolk a 42-38 lead in the final minute. The Tigers saw the Shepard sisters combine for 26 points, but got no more than six points from any other player.

BOYS: Norfolk (15-2) 62, Fremont (8-10) 49

In a physical contest, Norfolk survived a late run by Fremont, hitting free throws late to seal their 11th straight win. The Panthers opened up a 20-point lead in the 3rd quarter, only to see Fremont come storming back. The Tigers opened the 4th quarter with a 17-5 run to trim the lead to seven. But things unraveled for the Tigers with about 1:30 to go. Conner Deines was called for an intentional foul on Norfolk’s Lane McCallum. Fremont head coach Mark Williams then drew a technical foul arguing the call, and McCallum hit all four ensuing free throws to seal it. Travis Larson led the Panthers with a season-high 18 points and five rebounds. McCallum finished with 15, while Logan Strom contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Fremont was led by Logan Dillon, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the 2nd half.
