PLAINVIEW – It was a tale of two halves.
After struggling to find holes in Elgin Public/Pope John’s zone defense, the North Central Knights came alive in the 2nd half to pull off a 47-32 win in a Class D1 sub-district final in Plainview.
The Knights fell behind 22-13, but from the halfway mark of the 2nd quarter on, North Central outscored EPPJ 34-10, limiting the Wolfpack without a field goal for the entire fourth quarter.
The changeover happened as the Knights found senior Rachel Stewart inside. Stewart scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the 2nd half, and pulled down six rebounds. Jadyn Bussinger added 11 points.
Elgin Public/Pope John (19-4) senior Liz Selting scored 13 points in what may or may not be her final game. The Wolfpack were 6th in the wild card standings heading into Thursday and are still alive for one of the two wild card spots.
North Central (18-3) moves on to face Randolph in the district final next Friday, after the Cardinals beat Bloomfield in their district final.
