Osborn Breaks School Record For Most Passing Touchdowns, Wildcats Dominate In Home Opener

WAYNE – Family weekend brought out a crowd of over 1,800 fans to Bob Cunningham Field as the Wayne State College football team played host to University of Mary Saturday night.

During Family Weekend, and with fireworks scheduled to follow the game, the Wildcats started off with a score in 15 seconds from the special teams as junior Aaron Wright took back a 101-yard return to the house for six points.

WSC added to their fast start with two passing touchdowns in the opening quarter. Senior Zach Osborn found sophomore wideout Sam Wegner from 35 yards out while hooking up with senior wideout Nate Rogers on a 15-yard score put the ‘Cats up front 21-0.

Moving into the second quarter, University of Mary would score their lone first half points with a 26-yard field goal from senior place kicker Aaron Brennan, making the score 21-3.

Then Osborn would go into the record books of WSC after completing his 77th touchdown pass in his career when junior Layne Sullivan caught a 31-yard touchdown . Osborn surpassed Silas Fluellen (2003 – 2006) for the most touchdown passes by a Wildcat quarterback in school history.

WSC led 28-3 at half.

University of Mary wasn’t out of the game as the Marauders marched down the field on their first drive in the third quarter. Freshman slotback Deshawn Gay walked in from 59-yards out for a rushing touchdown to cut into the deficit, 28-10. University of Mary did finish with 312 yards on the ground as a team.

But, WSC would end the game with two more touchdowns and a pair of field goals.

Sophomore placekicker Ethan Knudson was perfect (6-6) in extra point attempts as well as converting a 19-yard and 38-yard field goal in the third and fourth quarters.

Osborn found Wegner for the second time on a 79-yard passing touchdown as senior running back Rashad Trimble recorded a 38-yard rushing touchdown.

Wayne State College defeated University of Mary 45-10 to improve to 1-1 on the season while the Marauders are now 0-2 on the year.

Osborn went 16-22 for 293 yards and four touchdowns with one interception as Wegner caught three passes for 125 yards and two scores. Sullivan added four grabs for 68 yards and a score as freshman Maliki Wilson led the rushing attack with nine carries for 75 yards.

Defensively, it was senior linebacker DeWayne Scott recording 11 total tackles (five solo) and one tackle for loss as senior lineman Logan Weinandt added 10 tackles (six solo). Senior Glenn Harris and sophomore Odessa Clark each had an interception for the ‘Cats from their strong safety position.

Wayne State College will next be in action at Minnesota Crookston on Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. UMC lost to #12 Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday, 56-19.
