Pierce Uses Dominant Second Half Performance to Advance to District Title

NORFOLK – Pierce and Wayne met up for the Class C1-7 subdistrict title at Norfolk High School on Thursday.

The Bluejays looked like a completely different team Thursday night. After struggling with Norfolk Catholic on Tuesday, they jumped out to a 7-0 run to start the game. Wayne came back on a 6-0 run the first quarter but Pierce would lead 11-8 heading to the second.

Both teams torched the net in the second quarter as Wayne and Pierce each scored 21 points with Pierce leading at halftime, 31-28.

The second half belonged to the Bluejays.

Pierce outscored Wayne 20-5 to end the game and Pierce advances to the district finals with a 52-34 victory and will take on Ord next Friday.

Ord beat O’Neill Thursday night, 40-37.

Pierce was led by junior Carly Sutherland, who would lead all scorers with 16 points. Sutherland also grabbed 13 rebounds in the win for the Bluejays.

Wayne shot 28% from the field and were led by Kelsey Boyer who finished with 11 points. The Blue Devils will graduate five seniors from this years squad, three of them being starters.

Wayne finishes the season with a 18-8 record under first year head coach Lindsay McLaughlin.

Pierce improves to 18-7 on the year and keep their postseason hopes alive with the win. Time and location of the district final between Pierce and Ord is TBA.
