WAYNE – All Fall Wayne High sports were recognized Monday late afternoon during a pep rally in the Jr/Sr High gymnasium.
The Blue Devil band as well as cheerleaders entertained the students, faculty, staff and parents.
The Blue Devil softball team was the main feature.
Wayne High earned the #4 seed of the Class B NSAA State Softball Tournament held at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings. The double elimination tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, October 11 – Friday, October 12.
The 28-3 Blue Devils have won seven straight games, going 2-0 in October; 17-1 in September and 9-2 in August.
#4 Wayne will face #5 (20-5) Gretna at 2 p.m. on field four during the first round and those who can’t make the trip to Hastings can follow the Blue Devils on 98.9 FM/AM 1590 The City and online at waynedailynews.com. Pregame coverage is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.
2017 marks the 15th year Wayne High has qualified for state, WHS went 0-2 last year.
For the Gretna Dragons, this will be the seventh year they’ve competed at state. Last year, they finished runner-up while were champions in Class B in 2015.
Other 2 o’clock first round Class B match-ups will feature #1 (22-5) Elkhorn South vs. #8 (21-13) McCook on field one; #3 (26-3) York vs. #6 (18-9) Seward on field three and #2 (34-2) Hastings vs. #7 (24-8) Crete on field two.
Class C games open at 9 a.m. while Class A softball contests will start around 11:30 a.m.
