Trojan Boys Basketball To Make Another Step On The Defensive End

WAKEFIELD – Just like the girls practicing in the main gym for the first half, the Wakefield boys basketball team took to the Activity Center after school got out Wednesday afternoon.

After giving up 59 points per game two years ago, the team was able to lower that to 52 per game last season. Wakefield will have a team goal of getting that closer to 40 points on the defensive end.

Head coach Joe Wendte enters his fourth-year coaching for the Wakefield Trojans. There is a total of 25 guys on the team with 12 suiting up for Varsity entering week one. Coach Wendte said the team’s motto has been to bring it everyday just a week and a half into the practice routine.

“You can’t take any teams lightly especially here in northeast Nebraska,” said Wendte. “It’s very competitive, so we need to show up every night play hard and play good defense and I think we could win a lot of basketball games.”

The Wakefield Trojans had a hot start to their schedule last year, winning six straight. Wakefield closed out their season, though, going 2-4 in the month of February to finish their season at 14-10. The Trojans went 0-3 in the Shootout On The Elkhorn in Wisner, won the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tourney in Homer and 1-1 in the L&C Conference Tourney.

Senior power forward Parker Lehmkuhl and junior two-guard Solomon Peitz are two of the seven upperclassmen on the varsity squad.

Lehmkuhl added what he’s most excited about and another team goal as Peitz mentioned what he’s looking forward to about the year.

“Well we have all our posts back, so we should be able to dominate the post,” Lehmkuhl added. “Just don’t be selfish with the basketball, just try to incorporate all your teammates with the ball.”

“Have the other team score fewer points,” Peitz mentioned. “Think we’re going to be quick this year and hopefully our offense is a little better than we did last year.”

The Wakefield boys basketball team will take part in a pair of home games to open their season. Wakefield will host Pender on Thursday, November 30 as Allen will be in town on Friday, December 1.
