Wayne High Girls Use Second Half Comeback, Battle Creek Boys Outscore WHS By Seven In Second Half

WAYNE – Following a road split Thursday night at South Sioux City, the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams took part in their regular season home opener.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Blue Devils played host to Battle Creek Friday night.

From the girls contest, Battle Creek held an early 15-10 lead until WHS won the second quarter, 12-10. The Bravettes still controlled the lead at the half, 25-22. The second half is where the Lady Blue Devils made their run with a 22-13 third quarter and 25-19 fourth. Wayne High won 69-57 to improve to 1-1 on the season while Battle Creek is now 0-1.

Kylie Hammer went off for 24 points and seven rebounds. Other double-figure scoring came from Frankie Klausen adding 16 points and another 11 from Ashton Boyer. Jamie Gamble tacked on another six boards and Gabi Meyer followed with five.

Turning to the boys game, Battle Creek held the early 20-12 lead. But, Wayne High won the second quarter, 20-12, to tie the game 32 all at half. After the Braves took a one-point lead following a 13-12 third quarter, Battle Creek outscored Wayne High, 23-17 in the fourth. Battle Creek held on for the 68-61 victory to improve to 1-0 on the season, while WHS falls to 1-1.

Jack Evetovich led all Blue Devils with 27 points and five rebounds. Mason Lee followed with 15 points and seven rebounds as Marcus Fertig added nine points and seven boards.

The Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams will next be in action on the road Tuesday, December 5 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder.
