WAYNE – As the first NCAA Division II women’s basketball regional rankings were announced Wednesday, Wayne State College finds themselves just on the outside of the top eight.
With two regular season games still to come this weekend and the NSIC Conference Tournament, the Wildcat women have won eight straight and are 22-6 overall (16-4 NSIC). WSC has an 18-6 record against Central Region teams.
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), Great American Conference (GAC) and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) make up the Central Region with 42 teams in it. The top eight teams remaining in the final rankings will advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament on March 9-10 and 12.
GAC’s Southwestern Oklahoma State leads the opening Central Region rankings (22-1 overall/22-1 in-region), followed by Central Missouri State of the MIAA in second (18-2/18-2), MSU Moorhead – NSIC at third (21-3/19-3), with back-to-back NSIC schools Augustana in fourth (21-2/19-2) and Northern State rounding out the top five (21-4/21-4).
Nebraska-Kearney – MIAA sixth (15-4/15-4), Emporia State – MIAA seventh (15-7/15-7), Pittsburg State MIAA eighth (18-5/18-5), Central Oklahoma – MIAA ninth (19-5/19-5) and Wayne State College in 10th.
Automatic bids are awarded to the winners of the NSIC, GAC and MIAA Conference Tournaments. The remaining, five pots are then awarded at an at-large basis.
The NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Show is set to air on NCAA.com at 9 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, March 4. The NCAA Elite 8 will take place on March 19-21-24 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The Wayne State College basketball teams will visit Upper Iowa at 6/8 p.m. on Friday, February 16 while traveling to Winona State University on Saturday, February 17 at 4/6 p.m.
