Wildcat Women’s Basketball Off To 4-3 Start, Ready To Close Out Non-Conference Schedule

WAYNE – The Wayne State College women’s basketball program is seven games into their 2017-18 campaign and will have their non-conference schedule come to an end this weekend.

WSC is currently 4-3 overall (0-1 NSIC) coming off an 83-78 overtime loss during their conference opener with Augustana this past Monday.

Chris Kielsmeier is in his 10th season as the head coach for Wayne State women’s basketball. He has compiled a 216-67 overall record while sporting a 148-46 mark in NSIC play. Coach Kielsmeier said this is one of the toughest non-conference schedules they have put together.

“There’s just so much growth that can happen from me to them,” said Kielsmeier. “I just need to get them to understand the game a little bit better and play the game smarter. Once we do that I think we’ll really take off.”

The Wildcat women were selected fourth (182) overall and second (44/three first place votes) in the NSIC South Division during the preseason rankings released on October 25. WSC returns three starters and nine letter winners after finishing second in the NSIC South last year with a 16-6 record.

Senior forward Paige Ballinger was listed as the Preseason South Division Player of the Year in voting by league coaches. As of last week, Ballinger is second on the team in points per game (11.2) and after adding one more block on Monday in the loss to Augustana she has now recorded 160 blocks in her Wildcat career. Jodie Boss (2007-09) is the current WSC leader in career blocked shots with 168.

Coach Kielsmeier added that the team will look to get into rhythm moving forward.

“It needs to happen sooner rather than later or we’re going to continue to dig ourselves a hole that it’s going to be tough for us to come out,” Kielsmeier added. “But, this team has a lot of confidence. We know we can be a great team this year we just got to prepare better and play better.”

The Wayne State College women will close out their four-game home stand with Peru State College on Friday, November 24 at 5 p.m. and Colorado Springs on Sunday, November 26 at 2 p.m.
