Wildcats Force Seven Interceptions, Defeat Augie 16-13

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – It was rivalry week for the Wayne State College football team as WSC visited Augustana University Saturday afternoon.

From Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Augie played host to Wayne State College in the NSIC South opener.

Following a blocked field goal in a double-overtime loss last week, sophomore placekicker Ethan Knudson converted 3-3 on field goals and a pick-six allowed the Wildcats to hold off Augustana, 16-13. WSC is now 3-2 (1-0 South) while the Vikings fall to 2-3 (0-1 South).

It was a back-and-forth first half battle of field position before Wayne State scored on a Knudson 26-yard field goal in the second quarter. Senior defensive back Glenn Harris had two of his three interceptions in the first half and set up a chance right before half for a 33-yard field goal.

At the half, WSC led 6-0.

In the third quarter, the Wildcat defense stepped up again with a pick-six from 44 yards out by junior defensive linemen Randy Bryan. Following the Knudson PAT, WSC led 13-0.

Knudson added his third field goal from 22 yards out in the third quarter, as Wayne State College held a 16-0 lead entering the fourth.

Augie didn’t give up as freshman quarterback Kyle Saddler recorded two passing touchdowns. A 15-yard pitch and catch to senior wideout Trevor DeSchepper and a 13-yard passing score to sophomore wideout Jake Welshemier, but failed to convert a two-point conversion.

With one second left on the clock, Augie got the ball back as Saddler threw his seventh interception of the game.

With senior quarterback Zach Osborn sidelined due to injury, sophomore Aaron Bleil started his first career game and went 12-27 for 138 yards with one interception. Junior Taylor Reedy also saw time in the backfield with 5 rushes for 44 yards (0-3 with INT).
