NORTH BEND – Following a week off from competition, the Wayne High volleyball team took part in their second tournament of the season.
From the Tiger Arena in North Bend, four varsity volleyball teams competed in the 2017 North Bend Central Invitational on Saturday.
In the opening round Wayne, High paired with David City Aquinas Catholic. WHS took the opening set, 25-16, before suffering a 25-19 second set defeat. In the third set, it took extra points but found Wayne High prevailing in three sets 27-25.
Freshman Lauren Pick recorded a team-high 14 kills, followed by seven from senior Kylie Hammer while sophomore Emily Armstrong, junior Ashton Boyer and senior Shania Anderson each added six kills. Sophomore Korrina Niemann paced the Blue Devils in digs with 18, followed by Hammer with 15 and Armstrong (10). Sophomore Allyson Avery tacked on a team-high 36 set assists.
During the Championship round, Wayne High took on North Bend Central. North Bend won the first set, 25-15, while the Blue Devils answered back with a 25-17 second set win. NBC then won in the final set, 25-12 to be crowned champions of their own tournament.
Armstrong was the team leader in kills with eight, followed by six each from Hammer and Pick. Hammer totaled 10 digs, followed by Armstrong’s seven and Avery recorded a team-high 20 set assists.
Wayne High is now 3-5 on the season and will visit Guardian Angels Central Catholic on Tuesday, September 12.
North Bend went 2-0 with a sweep over Raymond Central (25-9, 25-14) in their opening match to remain undefeated at 10-0. Aquinas Catholic swept Raymond Central in the consolation round (25-14, 25-18) to now sit 4-1 while Raymond Central falls back to 0-8 with a pair of losses.
