WSC Volleyball Goes 3-1 In Opening Tournament

GOLDEN, CO – The Wayne State College volleyball team had their opening tournament come to an end on Saturday.

From Golden, Colorado the 13th ranked ‘Cats competed with Western New Mexico and #15 Cal State-San Bernardino in the Colorado School of Mines Tournament.

Following a pair of four set victories on Friday, the ‘Cats recorded their first sweep of the season. WSC defeated Western New Mexico (25-23, 25-15, 25-20).

Junior Maria Wortmann paced WSC at the net with 10 kills and eight block assists while sophomore Katie Stephens added nine kills and 10 digs. Junior Megan Gebhardt was the team leader in set assists with 31 while freshman Alyssa Ballenger had 22 digs.

As a team, WSC out hit Western New Mexico .147 to .041.

Wayne State College then suffered their first loss of the season after going up two sets on Cal State-San Bernardino. But, CSU – San Bernardino won in five sets (21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 18-16). WSC is now 3-1 on the season.

Three Wildcats went off for double digit kills. Redshirt freshman Jaci Brahmer paced WSC with 16 kills, followed by senior Erin Gross with 14 and Wortmann added another 11. Gebhardt was the team leader in set assists with 43. Gross and Wortmann each had seven block assists while sophomore Haley Kauth led the team in digs with 24.

Katie Stephens was one kill away from a double-double, as she posted nine kills and 24 digs while Gebhardt needed one more dig for a double-double (nine digs).

Even though they suffered the five-set loss, the ‘Cats sill out hit CSU-San Bernardino .221 to .202.

Wayne State College volleyball will be back in Colorado for the CSU Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs Tournaments this coming weekend.
